Staying true to its belief of spotlighting and bringing revitalization to often overlooked enclaves of Montreal, this year, the SOUK comes to you from 7070 St Urbain, Mile-Ex. This flourishing area has, in recent years, attracted some of the world’s top tech companies as well as renowned restaurants, yet it has still managed to remain lowkey, guarding its compelling air of mystery.
In collaboration with Sid Lee Architecture, the SOUK will reinvigorate the unrefined floors of the building and bring its history back to life. An old garment factory, in what was once the textile capital of the country, and currently known as the “architects” district, the raw environment provides the perfect backdrop to encourage connection, exchanges, storytelling, and to purposefully build upon the significance of local design.
Through a rigorously curated cohort of over 65 participants by an expert panel of newly-appointed jury members, this year the SOUK will emphasize and elevate outstanding local designers and makers and bring them to the very heart of our community. Surrounding the designers will be a rich program of events from workshops to panels to bespoke guided tours of the event. A Pop-Up store will offer a more diverse range of products, accessible to all budgets and tastes, and a few other surprises will await visitors on site!
Montreal restaurant partners, to be announced, will be showcasing their talents using locally sourced produce at the SOUK restaurant. A pop-up Café, and a Lounge Bar serving a selection of local drinks and natural wines, also to be announced, round off the 19th edition of the SOUK.
For its 19th Edition, the SOUK was fortunate to have the support of several partners from diverse backgrounds, coming together to celebrate Montreal design. SOUK would like to thank each and every partner that dedicated their time and efforts to ensure an unforgettable experience.
Thank you to Sid Lee Architecture and to Montoni for the singular scenography and for preparing the space. Thank you to Montreal Brique et Pierre for all the cement blocks and bricks. Thank you to Lightspeed for the technological support. Thank you to Lambert & Fils for their light installations in both the entrance and Reading Nook.
The SOUK APÉRO featured a recycled stone bar designed by Sid Lee Architecture in collaboration with Moruzzi. The lounge itself was curated by Element de Base and d’Armes. The SOUK Restaurant was curated by Bloomfield with coffee from Café Pista, wine from Bacchus 76, cider from Intrus, and beer and alcohol by Menaud.
In addition, thank you to Aire Commune and Kermesse for their close collaboration.
Finally, this edition has come to life thanks to the financial support of SODEC.
Inaugurated in 2003, SOUK is an incomparable marketplace for ideas, catering to the aesthetically aware and the design conscious. Curating and showcasing exceptional things for the everyday modern lifestyle, it extends a unique opportunity to connect with Montreal’s finest designers and makers.
Stemming from the desire to create an interesting discourse around creative thinking and to elevate the first-rate local talent, SOUK built a community with common design ethos and engaging storylines. With Azamit at its helm, SOUK is an unparalleled platform for collaboration, imbuing the city with an artistic flair and building a polished tribe.
