65 Designers Selected by a Jury
For its 20th edition, SOUK once again gathered a jury of experts recognized for their design sensibility, creativity and commitment to Montreal talent. Together, they selected 65 designers whose creations, from eclectic curiosities to contemporary objects, ceramics, jewelry, books, food and clothing, will be showcased in an exceptional presentation celebrating two decades of craftsmanship and innovation.
Cary Tauben is an award-winning fashion stylist and creative director whose eye for fashion makes every look come alive. Cary’s talents have garnered the attention and established significant collaborations with brands such as Aldo, Chanel, Ray Ban & Samsung to name a few. Cary progressively built a reputation for portraying both gritty realism, hard-edged minimalism and graphic modernity that has landed him at the forefront of today’s new guard of fashion. Cary’s meticulous editorial work with photographers including Max Abadian, Chris Nichols and Dave Picard have featured supermodels like Irina Lazareanu, Coco Rocha and Heather Marks showcasing his work in many of the top fashion magazines across the country.
Jean-Michel Gadoua has established himself as an aesthetic and stylistic leader in contemporary design. Trained in graphic design and a musician, he served as art director for the Montreal label Le Son 666 in the 2000s. In 2019, he founded Éditions 8888, where he publishes his own creations as well as works by other Quebec designers and artists. Inspired by brutalism, postmodernism, science fiction, and music, he creates minimalist, dark, monolithic furniture. His philosophy: reject contemporary priorities and celebrate raw materials and spontaneous gestures.
Laurence Ouimet-Vives is the co-founder of Vives St-Laurent, a multidisciplinary design firm based in Montreal. Before founding the studio in 2018, she contributed as a writer for Frame Magazine, shaping her perspective on architecture and design. Today, this sensibility informs a practice focused on creating sustainable spaces where every detail contributes to a coherent and harmonious experience. As artistic director, Laurence guides design and execution with a thoughtful, attentive approach, favoring simplicity and balance to craft environments that retain their strength and integrity over time.
Léa Behr and Nicolas Hoang founded Léa & Nicolas in 2016, driven by the desire to create with their hands and bring an artisanal dimension to their collaboration. Trained in applied arts, crafts, and architecture, they previously worked as a graphic designer and architecture technician before choosing ceramics as their shared medium. Originally from Alsace and Vietnam and based in Montreal since 2010, they craft red stoneware ceramics with clean lines and subtle textures, exploring the balance between function and sculpture through patience, perseverance, and an economy of means.
Samuel has nurtured a curiosity for design since a young age. Trained through agency work, he found at Sid Lee Architecture the ideal environment to explore collaborative design and the art of storytelling. Today, as creative director at Menu Extra, he oversees the studio’s experiential scenography and coordinates enriching collaborations. Driven by the desire to create moments of sharing, Samuel designs ephemeral experiences that captivate the imagination while bringing people together. Passionate about Montreal’s design scene, he aims to amplify local talent and contribute to its international recognition.
